Breast Examination

Breast Examination at LifeCycle Women's Health Clinic

We encourage women to self-examine their breasts regularly, ideally once a month, so that they may become familiar with what is normal for them. It is not unusual for them to feel different at different times of the month and at different stages throughout a woman's life.

If you have concerns about a change in your breasts you can attend the clinic for an examination in a safe and welcoming environment.

Often we will be able to reassure you that there is nothing of concern, but if necessary we can refer you to the Breast Clinic in the local hospital.

Symptoms which should prompt you to make an appointment would be:

  • a new lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast

  • a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts

  • bloodstained discharge from either of your nipples

  • a lump or swelling in either of your armpits

  • dimpling on the skin of your breasts

  • a rash on or around your nipple

  • a change in how your nipple looks, such as becoming sunken into your breast

Breast Check

Breast Check provides a breast cancer screening service for women age 50 to 69 in Ireland. This involves a mammogram every 2 years. You should receive an invitation letter after you turn 50. If you don't you can register on the Breast Check website.

It is important to note that this is a screening service for women who don't have symptoms. If you have a new symptom you are concerned about you should always attend a doctor, even if you have recently had a mammogram.

Family history of breast cancer

If you have a strong family history of breast cancer this can be discussed. In some cases it may be appropriate to be referred to a specialist clinic at a younger age.
