What is the Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is a long-acting contraceptive injection that contains the hormone progesterone.

It is administered once every three months and is an effective means of preventing pregnancy by suppressing ovulation. Its ease of use and long-lasting protection make it a preferred choice for many women who are seeking reliable contraception.

How Does it Work?

Depo-Provera works by releasing a synthetic form of progesterone into the body. This prevents ovulation, the process in which the ovaries release eggs. It also works to thicken the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg.

Key Benefits:

  • Highly Effective: When administered correctly and on schedule, Depo-Provera is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

  • Convenience: Depo-Provera is administered via an injection into a muscle every 12 weeks. It's an excellent option for those seeking a hassle-free method of contraception.

Depo-Provera: Things to Consider

  • Return to Fertility: There can be a delay in the return to fertility after stopping Depo-Provera, sometimes up to a year.

  • Bleeding Patterns: As with other progesterone-only contraceptives, Depo-Provera may cause unpredictable bleeding patterns, especially in the first few months.

  • Bone Density: Use of Depo-Provera has been associated with a decrease in bone density, although this typically reverses after stopping.

  • Duration of Use: As a result of its potential impact on bone density, Depo-Provera is generally not recommended for use longer than two years

Is the Depo-Provera Right for You?

Choosing a contraceptive option is a very personal choice and will depend on health and lifestyle factors that are unique to you. Before choosing Depo-Provera, or any method of contraception,  it’s always best to discuss your options with a healthcare professional before making a decision.
