What is the Implanon implant?

Implanon is a small, flexible rod that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a steady dose of progesterone, a hormone that prevents pregnancy by working to inhibit ovulation and by thickening cervical mucus. A long-term contraceptive option, Implanon is designed to last for three years.

How Does it Work?

The Implanon implant releases progesterone into the bloodstream, preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation). It also thickens the mucus in the cervix which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.

Key Benefits:

  • Highly Effective: Implanon is the most effective form of contraception with a prevention rate of over 99%.

  • Long-Term Contraceptive Option: Implanon lasts up-to three years making it a convenient, long-term contraceptive solution.

  • Reversible: Fertility typically returns quickly after the implant is removed, making it a good option for women who plan to conceive in the future.

  • Discreet: The implant is in a discreet on the underside of the upper arm.

Implanon: Things to Consider

  • Insertion and Removal: Insertion and removal of the implant involves a minor medical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. There may be some bruising, a small scar and a small risk of infection.

  • Bleeding Patterns: As with other progesterone-only contraceptives, Implanon may initially cause unpredictable bleeding patterns. While this typically settles over time, this may not be the case for a small percentage of women who might need to have the implant removed before the three year period ends.
